ABOUT OUR PROGRAMS

Language Arts

Our Language Arts curriculum emphasizes vocabulary, detail, GUM (grammar, usage, mechanics) and organization. We also offer more engaging material for advanced students. Regardless of level, all our books cover diverse subject matter: literature, history, math, and even philosophy. Likewise, each reading exercise is followed by several writing questions. In addition to these components, which are crucial but standard, we offer a little something extra.

Our teachers lean in to classroom discussion a bit more than others, and we emphasize the note-taking process. We encourage students to elaborate on answers, to make connections to personal experience and even current events. We encourage students to use the internet to look up words and find answers. Furthermore, we haven’t forgotten the importance of literature for personal development: we use short stories and poems to teach lessons. For those with a particular passion for the material, we offer a Writer’s Practicum (upon completion, students will receive a professional-quality book, with their own work in it). Finally, we’re eager to customize each class based on students’ needs and parents’ wishes. In short, we offer a balance of traditional Language Arts instruction and enrichment.

Standardized Tests

We offer individual sessions and small-group classes for students preparing for Standardized Tests, including ACT, SAT, SSAT, ISEE, and PARCC. Our curriculum emphasizes test-taking techniques, time management, and active reading. We also encourage students to take notes, rearrange questions, answer questions in their own words, and (except for the most advanced students) skip generously. In addition to these conventional strategies, we use each passage as a pathway to learning.

That is, we encourage students to conduct research into the topics brought up by the passages and to look up any words that they don’t know, and we’re convinced that a little background info regarding a topic can make all the difference. Last but not least, we teach speed-reading for the inevitable times when students must rush.

Singapore Math

We offer math programs from Pre-K to High School Curriculum. Especially for elementary students, we are using Singapore Math Method, which is a highly effective teaching approach. This method has been widely adopted in various foams around the world.

The Singapore Math Method is focused on skill mastery, which is achieved through intentional sequencing of concepts. Instead of pushing through rote memorization, students learn to think mathematically and rely on the depth of knowledge gained in previous lessons.
